Mariachi School LOS DORADOS is the first school in Vancouver dedicated to educating young girls and boys in a celebrated and cherished musical tradition of Mexico.The Mariachi School provides unique learning opportunities for youth interested in playing instruments and singing classic rancheras while helping to develop a strong sense of identity and community pride in a bilingual environment.The Mariachi School is open to Mexican and non-Mexican students, ages 4 -20. Mariachi School LOS DORADOS

The Mariachi School LOS DORADOS provides an opportunity for students to learn the music and culture of the Mariachi. The curriculum consists of teaching students instrumental and vocal skills to share their talent, enthusiasm, and dedication to the preservation and enjoyment of a traditional cultural music.

The curriculum provides lessons in the basic Instruments of Mariachi - violin, guitar, guitarrón, vihuela and trumpet as well as a repertoire of traditional Mariachi songs.

Through the Mariachi School, students are able to:
• gain an understanding of the historical development of Mariachi music
• gain confidence in their abilities as musicians individually and as members of a group
• improve critical thinking, listening and study skills
• cultivate positive self-esteem and interpersonal skills
• develop a life-long appreciation and interest in music

Assessment:

The following is a list of areas that may be used in assessing student progress
• Teacher evaluation and progress reports
• Class attendance with all the necessary materials
• Participation in class activities and respect for music and classmates
• Performing
• Singing

Level: Beginner

Description: Students are introduced to the basic concepts of music and its terminology. Students will study basic musical composition as it relates to the Mariachi genre. Instructors will emphasis listening habits; knowledge and care of an instrument.

This course will allow students to learn
• basic technique of an instrument and identify the functional parts of his/her musical instrument
• fundamental music notation
• basic music vocabulary and the use of musical terms

Level: Intermediate

Description: Students continue to develop their understanding of Mariachi musical form and composition and extending their music skills. Further voice lessons continue to be developed.

This course will allow students to:
• develop the ability to successfully represent a variety of Mariachi skills/techniques
• incorporate traditional rhythms used in Mariachi music into musical performances

Level: Advance
